NVIDIA: "Access denied" in 3D settings

Symptom

In the NVIDIA Control Panel, you change a setting under “Manage 3D settings”, click “Apply” — and get the “Access denied” error. The setting is not saved. Most often the problem appears after an NVIDIA driver update.

Typical causes

A driver update corrupts the profile data of the 3D settings, and the new driver version cannot write changes to the old profile. Less often, the cause is an antivirus blocking the write, or a broken driver installation.

Fix in BoosterX

Open BoosterX → the “Fixes” section (in the left menu) → in the search, type “Nvidia” → the card “Access denied error when applying Nvidia 3D settings” → “Fix”. The current 3D settings are reset to defaults in the process — that is the price of restoring functionality. BoosterX can be downloaded from the official website boosterx.org.

How to verify

Open the NVIDIA Control Panel → “Manage 3D settings”, change any setting and click “Apply” — the error will be gone and the setting will be saved.

Manual alternative without BoosterX

A clean driver reinstall: download the latest driver from the NVIDIA website, run the installation with the “Perform a clean installation” option (it resets all settings, including 3D). After installation the panel will work, but all custom settings will have to be set again.

If it did not help

If the error persists, the problem is probably deeper — in the driver installation or in a block by the antivirus. Check the events in EventX and write to support.
