Disable if not needed

If you do not use offline Windows maps, disable their automatic updates. For navigation without the internet, leave updates enabled.

Already downloaded maps are not deleted. If necessary, they can be updated manually through Windows Settings.

In short

The setting blocks automatic updates of offline maps. It does not delete already downloaded regions, does not disable the Maps app and does not prevent checking for updates manually.

If you do not use offline maps, their automatic check is unnecessary. But if a laptop or tablet is needed for navigation without the internet, outdated maps can get in the way.

What changes

  • Windows should not automatically download offline map updates.
  • Already downloaded regions remain on the disk.
  • Manual download and update of maps remain available.
  • The system Maps service is not disabled and can start when the corresponding features are used.

The specific amount of saved traffic, the cache size and the prevention of computer wake-ups are not confirmed. These values depend on the selected regions and the Windows version.

How to choose

  • Disable auto-update if you do not use offline maps.
  • Leave it enabled on a laptop or tablet for navigation without a network.
  • If maps are needed rarely, you can update the required regions manually before a trip.

How to verify the result

Open “Windows Settings” → “Apps” → “Offline maps”. Downloaded regions should remain available. In the same section, you can manually check for or download updates.

How to change and revert

In BoosterX, open “Optimization” → “Basic” → “Updates and delivery” → “Maps auto-update” and set the toggle to “Enabled”: BoosterX will apply the disabling of maps auto-update. Click “Apply” at the bottom of the page. If “Instant apply” is enabled, a separate button is not required.

To revert, set “Maps auto-update” to “Disabled” and click “Apply”: BoosterX will return the default mode, and Windows will again be able to automatically service downloaded regions.

Microsoft documents the official policy for disabling automatic download and update of map data. However, network activity on Windows 11 25H2 was not measured in this study, so confidence in the direct effect remains moderate.
