Errors 2502 and 2503 when installing programs

Installation or removal of a program is interrupted by a Windows Installer (MSI) window with error code 2502 or 2503. It often repeats across different MSI packages: office software distributions, drivers, development environments.

Typical causes

  • NTFS permissions on the system temporary folder have been broken: the installer cannot create temporary files there and fails with codes 2502/2503. Permissions are usually broken by “cleaners”, security tweaks and manual experiments with folder permissions.

Fix in BoosterX

Open BoosterX → “Fixes” (in the left menu) → in the search field enter “Error code 2502 and 2503 MSI” → “Fix” → restart Windows. The fix restores permissions on the system temporary folder — it eliminates program installation errors.

How to verify

Run the installation of the same program again: it should get past the point where codes 2502/2503 previously appeared.

Manual alternative without BoosterX

Manually check the permissions on the folder C:\Windows\Temp: File Explorer → right-click the folder → “Properties” → “Security”. Check that the system accounts have not lost access, and compare the list of entries with a reference Windows — for example, on another computer. Doing this manually takes noticeably longer and is easier to get wrong.
