On a desktop PC, disable it: coordinates are really only needed by weather, automatic time zone and “Find my device”, and BoosterX recommends blocking on a PC without GPS modules.

What changes

The Windows Location Provider determines the device’s coordinates using GPS, Wi-Fi access points and the cellular network. According to BoosterX’s visible description, the setting completely disables this detection: Windows and apps do not receive the location, and geodata transmission stops. Dependent scenarios are lost: the automatic time zone stops adjusting, “Find my device” stops working, and apps with geolocation lose their coordinates. In Windows 11, the weather on the taskbar may be shown by IP address — this is a limited substitute, not the provider working.

Emergency calls determine the location regardless of the setting. You can turn it back on in Windows: “Settings” → “Privacy” → “Location” (in Windows 11 — “Settings” → “Privacy & security” → “Location”). Allowing specific apps is a separate setting “App location access”; completely disabling the sensor stack is “Sensors”.

How to verify the result

After disabling, the weather shows the last known or a general region, the automatic time zone does not update when the network changes, and the “Find my device” page in the Microsoft account reports that the location is unavailable.

How to change and revert

Open “Optimization” → “Privacy” → “System privacy” → “Windows Location Provider”, toggle the switch to “Enabled”: BoosterX will apply the disabling of location detection. Click “Apply”. If “Instant apply” is enabled, a separate button is not required. To revert, toggle the switch to “Disabled” and apply the change again: BoosterX will return Windows to its default state with the location provider working.
