Automatic Windows updates: drivers, maps, and Store apps

Short answer
Section titled “Short answer”Drivers, offline maps and Microsoft Store apps update independently. Excluding drivers does not stop Windows updates. Disabling automatic Store updates keeps the store accessible, and turning off automatic map updates should not delete downloaded regions.
Status: the policy boundaries for drivers and Microsoft Store are documented by Microsoft. For offline maps, no public Microsoft specification was found: the available guides agree with each other, but the actual network cycle of Windows 11 25H2 was not measured in this study.
Testable claim
Section titled “ Testable claim”We tested four claims:
- Disabling automatic driver updates does not stop regular Windows updates.
- Disabling automatic updates of offline maps does not delete the maps themselves and does not prevent manual updates.
- The Microsoft Store policy disables automatic downloading of app updates, but does not block launching the store or manual updates.
- These mechanisms are independent and should not be described as a global disabling of all updates.

Methodology
Section titled “ Methodology”For drivers and Store, the purpose of the policy, supported Windows versions, states and scope were compared against Microsoft Learn. For offline maps, independent public guides for Windows 10 and Windows 11 were compared; no separate official Microsoft specification was found for the toggle in question.
We did not intercept network traffic, did not observe long-term background maintenance, did not measure packet sizes and did not verify automatic updates of real apps and devices. The conclusions describe the documented purpose of the policies, not the results of such observations.

Drivers
Section titled “Drivers”Microsoft states directly that the enabled policy ExcludeWUDriversInQualityUpdate excludes drivers from Windows quality updates. If the policy is disabled or not configured, Windows Update may include updates classified as Driver.
Windows Update keeps working, and drivers can be installed manually. Once the policy is enabled, you have to keep track of their currency yourself.
Offline maps
Section titled “Offline maps”Several independent guides describe the same toggle: automatic updates of offline maps can be disabled, while downloaded regions and manual maintenance remain available.
No separate Microsoft specification was found for this setting. We did not observe the long-term cycle of background updates on Windows 11 25H2, so the complete disappearance of related network traffic on every build is not confirmed.
Microsoft Store apps
Section titled “Microsoft Store apps”Microsoft describes an ADMX-based policy that disables automatic downloading of Store app updates. If the policy is disabled or not configured, the automatic mode is determined by the store settings.
Microsoft Store remains accessible. Security and compatibility fixes have to be installed manually.
What is confirmed
Section titled “ What is confirmed”- Drivers can be excluded from Windows Update without disabling updates of Windows itself.
- The Store policy controls automatic downloading of app updates, not launching the store.
- Offline maps have separate controls and are not tied to driver or Store policies.
- After disabling each automatic path, maintenance of the corresponding class of updates passes to the user.
What is not confirmed
Section titled “ What is not confirmed”- a fixed saving of traffic or disk space;
- prevention of reboots after installing any driver;
- the absence of all background requests from map components and Microsoft Store;
- changes in CPU, RAM, FPS, frametime or input latency;
- identical runtime behavior across all versions of the Microsoft Store client;
- the actual frequency of map updates on Windows 11 25H2.
Limitations
Section titled “ Limitations”For drivers and Store, the conclusions rely on the official description of the policies; the installation of specific updates was not measured. For offline maps there is less data: the guides describe the same behavior, but there is no official Microsoft specification and no first-hand verification in operation.
The result should not be carried over to third-party manufacturer update programs. NVIDIA App, AMD Software, Intel Driver & Support Assistant and OEM utilities can download drivers independently of Windows Update.
Practical conclusion
Section titled “ Practical conclusion”Disable automatic updates only where you are ready to keep track of them yourself:
- drivers, if you pin a verified version or use manufacturer packages;
- maps, if offline navigation is not used;
- Store, if you regularly run a manual check for app updates.
Each setting has its own scope. Cumulative Windows updates and security fixes should continue to be installed.

Restoring the state
Section titled “ Restoring the state”To revert, enable the corresponding toggle in BoosterX and apply the changes. This returns control of automatic updates to the standard Windows or Microsoft Store mechanisms. Already installed versions of drivers and apps are not rolled back automatically on revert.
After reverting, manually run Windows Update and Microsoft Store if you need to check for missed updates right away. For offline maps, use «Windows Settings» → «Apps» → «Offline maps».
