Microsoft Defender SmartScreen checks the reputation of files downloaded from the internet. Depending on policy, it shows a warning or blocks bypassing it. Reputation checking complements antivirus content scanning.

The brief checking process when opening a new file is not a constant gaming load. Disabling it entirely reduces protection precisely at the moment an unknown app is launched, when it is most useful.

What changes

The setting affects several SmartScreen and app installation control mechanisms. When disabled, the following stop working: reputation checking of apps and files downloaded from the internet; a warning before launching a suspicious or unknown download (depending on Windows policy, it shows a warning or blocks bypassing it); app installation control. The brief checking process when opening a new file also stops, while antivirus content scanning remains.

How to change and revert

In BoosterX, open “Optimization” → “Security” → “Basic Windows protection” → “Smartscreen” and set the toggle to “Off”: BoosterX will apply the standard Windows state with reputation checking working. Click “Apply” at the bottom of the page. If “Instant apply” is enabled, the change is applied immediately. To disable reputation checking, use the “On” position: BoosterX will apply its recommended SmartScreen disabling; standard Windows protection returns with the “Off” position. To verify, open the “Windows Security” → “App & browser control” → “Reputation-based protection” window and make sure “Check apps and files” is enabled. If the settings are managed by an organization, the local toggle may be unavailable.

SmartScreen does not detect all malicious files, so updates and antivirus are still needed. When disabled, reputation checking stops working. No measurable benefit for FPS or latency has been established.
