Depends on the situationDisable compression if artifacts are visible on wallpapers with smooth gradients or large text: the background will remain at its original quality.
On photographs, artifacts are usually invisible — leave the default behavior.

What changes
Section titled “What changes”Windows displays not the wallpaper file itself, but a copy prepared when the background is set, compressed to JPEG by default. On photographs this is usually invisible, but on smooth gradients, dark fills and large thin text, banding, halos and “milky” noise appear. This setting disables that compression: the prepared background copy keeps its original quality.
The change affects only the desktop wallpaper. Textures in games, images in applications and FPS are not affected.

The 100 value sets the maximum re-encoding quality. In Windows the value is not set by default, and the background is compressed more heavily.
Exceptions and differences
Section titled “Exceptions and differences”The current background copy is not re-encoded automatically: after applying, set the same wallpaper again so that Windows prepares it without compression. To revert to compression, set the toggle to “Off” and select the background again. The action is the same in Windows 10 and Windows 11.
How to verify the result
Section titled “How to verify the result”Take a wallpaper with a smooth dark gradient and large thin text. Before the change, examine the background up close: banding is visible at the transitions, and halos around the letters. Apply the setting, set the same background file again and compare the same fragments: the transitions should become clean.
How to change and revert
Section titled “How to change and revert”Open “Optimization” → “Customization” → “Visual effects” → “Desktop background compression” and set the toggle to “On”: BoosterX will apply the disabling of background compression. Click “Apply” at the bottom of the page; with “Instant apply” enabled, the change is made immediately. Then select the wallpaper again. To revert, set the toggle to “Off”, click “Apply” and set the background again — Windows will return to the compressed copy.

- Desktop background re-encoding was verified against Windows behavior; no public Microsoft documentation about the JPEGImportQuality value was found as of the verification date, so the statement remains without an external source.
