What changes

Steps Recorder (also known as Problem Steps Recorder) is a built-in Windows tool for documenting problems. While recording, it captures the user’s actions step by step and creates a report with screenshots and a description of each action — ready-made step-by-step documentation for support.

Recording only runs while the tool is started manually: the desktop is not recorded continuously, so disabling it does not give a continuous gaming gain. The BoosterX setting makes the tool unavailable for launch.

The tool is being deprecated: Microsoft announced in November 2023 that Steps Recorder is no longer updated and will be removed from future versions of Windows. It may already be absent in new Windows builds, and for screen recording Microsoft offers Snipping Tool, Xbox Game Bar and Clipchamp. The setting is not hidden in either Windows 10 or Windows 11. Keep privacy in mind: while recording, screenshots and typed text end up in the report — do not start it when personal data is open.

Try to launch Steps Recorder via search in the Start menu: after disabling, the tool does not start.

How to change and revert

Open Optimization → Customization → Windows features → Steps Recorder and switch the toggle to “Enabled”: BoosterX will apply the disabling of the Steps Recorder tool. Click “Apply” at the bottom of the page; if “Instant apply” is enabled, a separate button is not required. To revert, switch the toggle to “Disabled”: BoosterX will return Windows to its default state — Steps Recorder is available again.
