Disable P2P

For a single home or gaming PC, use HTTP-only. Windows will continue downloading updates, but will stop looking for peers and exchanging content with them.

On a network with multiple Windows computers, P2P can save external traffic and speed up repeated downloads, so leave LAN mode there.

Delivery Optimization can receive parts of updates from other devices and send already downloaded content to peers. The HTTP Only (0) mode disables peer-to-peer caching but keeps downloading from the original HTTP source or Microsoft Connected Cache with metadata from the Delivery Optimization cloud service.

The setting disables P2P exchange and the related network activity. Windows Update, Microsoft Store and the Delivery Optimization service keep working; background downloads are preserved.

  • For a single PC or when there is no need to distribute updates, choose HTTP-only.
  • For several Windows devices on the same LAN, the built-in LAN mode can reduce repeated downloads from the internet.
  • Update speed is limited by separate bandwidth policies. The DODownloadMode=0 parameter does not limit it.

In BoosterX, open “Optimization” → “Basic” → “Updates and delivery” → “Delivery Optimization” and switch the toggle to “Enabled”: BoosterX will apply HTTP-only mode without P2P exchange. Click “Apply” at the bottom of the page. This disables P2P, but not Windows Update. If “Instant apply” is enabled, the change is applied immediately.

To revert, switch “Delivery Optimization” to “Disabled” and click “Apply”: BoosterX will delete the policy override and restore the default delivery optimization mode.

Disabling P2P is confirmed. The overall savings in traffic, CPU and download time depend on the number of peers, updates and the network.
