Leave it enabled if you use old games, installers and corporate software. Disable it only with a verified modern set of programs.

BoosterX marks disabling as recommended: its profile is aimed at minimizing background activity. This page bets on the reliability of old programs; the discrepancy is explained below.

What changes

Windows contains a set of compatibility technologies for old programs. The key visible element is the Program Compatibility Assistant (PCA): according to Microsoft documentation, it detects failures during installation and operation of applications and blocked drivers and offers to run the program in compatibility mode. At startup, Windows checks programs against a database of known issues and manifests.

Disabling removes these checks. Visible consequences: the assistant stops automatically finding and fixing problems, old installers and games may silently crash — BoosterX’s visible description directly warns that “old programs and games will not work”. The savings in background activity are small.

Exceptions and differences

This is where the recommendations diverge. BoosterX marks disabling as recommended: the application’s settings profile is aimed at minimizing background activity. This article is aimed at the reliability of old programs. Conditional recommendation: if you have no old games or programs, disabling is safe; if you do, leave it enabled. Disabling telemetry is a separate setting on the “Privacy” page (according to the visible description).

How to verify the result

  1. Before the change, launch an old game or installer that you use.
  2. Disable the setting and repeat the launch.
  3. If the program stops launching, saving parameters or closing during installation — restore compatibility.

How to change and revert

In BoosterX, open “Optimization” → “Tweaks” → “Maintenance and diagnostics” → “Application compatibility”, move the toggle to the desired state and click “Apply”. If “Instant apply” is enabled, a separate click is not required. Check that the old programs you need launch.
